The strength of sisterly bonds starts from the very beginning, sometimes even before birth. When an older sister hears that she will be getting a baby sister, her whole world changes. Little girls love the thought of having a built-in soul sister. Someone to play dolls with. An ever-present best friend to share late night giggles. Someone who can participate in daily tea parties with teddy bears and pretend to be superheroes with magical capes—an unstoppable dynamic duo.
About this session
When four-year-old Shangdyi found out that she was becoming a big sister, she used those long nine months to prepare, looking forward each day to the arrival of her best friend. Finally, the day came when baby Shangde made her big debut into the family. She was sweet little one, weighing 8.5 pounds and measuring 20.5 inches. Big Sister could not have been more excited, and she had a blast posing in the photoshoot with her new baby sister.
Their mother, Ying, was excited to try out a variety of fun themes. She loves the beach, so we did lots of light and airy photos filled with ocean-blue colors and seashells. Since little Shangde was only twelve days old, she used the shoot as a chance to catch up on her beauty sleep. (She did, however, wake up for just a few of the photos, and she showed off her beautiful dark eyes as she gave a sleepy yawn—precious!) For some of the beachy images, I had fun recreating ocean scenes from soft wisps of cotton material. I think the one spelling out “LOVE” would look beautiful as an enlarged portrait for a nursery! Ying picked out a great balance of girly floral backdrops as well as some adventurous ones like the World Traveler and Vintage Car themes—this little girl can dream big and do anything she wants when she grows up. Not even the sky is the limit!
The sibling photos were so sweet. Shangdyi snuggled close to her baby sister, carefully padding the baby’s soft cheeks beneath her palms. Just a few days in, and she is already an exceptional big sister, protecting her from the slightest discomfort. We also got a few family photos, too. The four of them looked so happy as baby Shangde filled a perfect spot in their hearts. I always love capturing special family moments like these. Welcome to the world, little one!
