Mom and Dad chose a jungle theme for their son’s first birthday because they knew he would love it. They were right. As soon as his parents brought him into the studio, his eyes grew wide, and he happily sat down to explore the hanging vines and animals in the backdrop. I snapped a few photos of the handsome birthday boy in his cute – and clean – outfit before bringing out the cake. I just had a feeling this little guy might get messy during cake smash time.

Let me tell you, this little one had THE cutest facial expressions! He had me laughing more and more with every silly glance and smile. He has so much personality, and as a child photographer, I live for moments like these! I couldn’t wait to show these adorable portraits to Mom and Dad.

Bring Out the Cake!

After showing off a bit, the birthday boy started getting a little antsy and we decided that would be a great time to bring out the cake. And those hilarious faces were back! He eyed the cake coming in, and when we set it down, we didn’t even have time to sing ‘Happy Birthday!’ He just dug right in. Even with all of the colorful sprinkles and little sign added on top, he knew this was food. And he knew it would be delicious.

Once he started, there was no stopping this hungry birthday boy. We even tried switching scenes and putting him in the bathtub for the ‘clean up’ photos, but he just reached right over the side of the tub and grabbed another handful of chocolate cake. I don’t blame him. If you’ve got your own cake, take advantage of every bite!

I understand that not all little ones are so enthusiastic about birthday cake since most have never experienced it before, but I always get a kick out of the true cake smashers like this little guy. His photos tell a story from beginning to end, and I’m so glad I was able to document these sweet memories for this family. I bet he will get a kick out of them, too, when he’s a little older.
