Newborn Twin Photography: What Parents of Twins Should Know

In short: The best time for newborn twin photography is in the babies’ first two weeks, or as soon as they are home and settled. The session follows their pace: we pause for feeds and cuddles, photograph each baby alone, then both together, and then the whole family. You bring the babies and milk, and the studio has everything else.

  • 5–14 daysideal age, or once they are home
  • 1–3 hoursbaby-led, with breaks for two
  • Next dayphotos ready to view

Twins bring double the joy and, of course, double the questions. I photograph twins and triplets often, and as a twin mom myself, I know how full those first weeks feel. This guide explains how newborn twin photography works in my private studio near Tysons Corner. It also covers maternity photos with twins and your twins’ first birthday.

When to book newborn twin photography

Book your session during pregnancy, so your dates are held from the due date. Twins often arrive early. In fact, preterm birth is the most common complication of a multiple pregnancy, according to ACOG. So we plan from your due date and simply move the session when the babies come.

The ideal window for newborn twin photography is 5 to 14 days after birth. At that age, babies sleep deeply and curl up naturally. If your twins need extra time in the hospital, we wait until they are home and settled. Older newborns photograph beautifully too, and we just adjust the poses.

Planning maternity photos as well? With twins, book them a few weeks earlier than you would for one baby. Here is more on when to plan maternity photos.

How a twin newborn session works

Every newborn session in my studio is baby-led, and with twins that matters twice. First, big brothers or sisters join for a few portraits while they are still fresh. Then I photograph each baby on their own, because they are two different little people. After that come the twin poses, and finally the family portraits.

Twins often feed and sleep on slightly different schedules. Therefore, one baby may nap while we work with the other, and we pause whenever either one needs you. A session lasts 1 to 3 hours, so plan a relaxed morning. Your photos are ready to view the next day, which is the happy end of every session of newborn twin photography.

Favorite poses for newborn twin photography

Twins spent nine months side by side, and they still look for each other. I love the moment when they turn in toward one another. Here are the poses parents ask for most:

  • Cheek to cheek: the two babies snuggled together, often with their hands touching.
  • Two colors, one set: matching wraps in two colors, because they are two distinct babies.
  • The heart basket: both twins curled up together in one heart-shaped bed.
  • Themed sets: flowers, seasons or a rainbow tree for the nursery wall or a birth announcement.
  • The family silhouette: parents forehead to forehead, with the babies resting between them.

The studio also has props made for two, and even for three, so each set fits both babies comfortably.

Is newborn twin photography safe?

Yes. Safety comes first in every pose, and with two babies I simply take more time for each step. The studio is warm and quiet, and every set is built for the babies’ comfort. For example, if a pose doesn’t feel right for one twin, we skip it. I also hold a current CPR, AED and First Aid certificate, and I am an NAPCP Master Photographer.

Big brothers and sisters

Siblings are part of the story, so they always come first, before they get tired. The studio has toys and snacks for them, too. Afterwards, a grandparent or a partner can take them home while the twins sleep.

What to bring to a twin newborn session

  • Bring your babies and milk. The studio has diapers, wipes, blankets, wraps, props and newborn outfits.
  • Pack a pacifier if your twins use one, plus a spare top for each parent.
  • Dress parents and siblings in soft, solid colors. Moms can also choose a dress from the studio collection.
  • Tell me in advance if grandparents will join, so we can plan a few extra portraits.

Your twins’ first year and first birthday

Newborn twin photography is just the beginning. Many twin families come back when the babies can sit up, and again for their first birthday. By then, two personalities shine through: one twin laughs at everything, while the other studies the camera.

For first birthdays, I like bright, simple sets and outfits that coordinate without matching. Cake smash sessions with twins are pure fun, with one shared cake or one each. Here is how cake smash sessions work.

Questions about newborn twin photography

How old should twins be for newborn photos?

Ideally 5 to 14 days old. If they arrive early or need hospital time, we count from the day they come home.

How long does a twin newborn session take?

Plan for 1 to 3 hours. We take as many breaks as the babies need, so nobody feels rushed.

Can a big brother or sister join?

Of course. Siblings come first, while they are fresh, and they are welcome in the family portraits.

Do you photograph triplets?

Yes. Triplets need a little more planning and a lot of patience, and I love them. Take a look at this triplet newborn session.

Can we book maternity photos too?

Yes. With twins, plan your maternity session a few weeks earlier than usual, since twins often arrive early.
